New Funding for Girls Self Defence Project
On 1st April the Girls’ Self Defence Project was advised that the government contract it has held for the past 15 years was being terminated from 30 June as a result of a reprioritisation of funding. This week brought the excellent news that the Government has now renewed its commitment to the Girls’ Self Defence Project with funding for a further 12 months. “We are relieved and delighted with this commitment to enable the work of the Girls’ Self Defence Project to continue” said Women’s Self Defence Network — Wāhine Toa spokeswoman Alison Broad. “As a result of this commitment, over the next year more than 7,000 girls throughout New Zealand will take part in specialised self defence programmes for girls.” “We are very appreciative of the support of girls, their families, schools and groups from all corners of New Zealand, who advocated for the continuation of the Girls’ Self Defence Project. And we are especially appreciative of the support of Minister Turia and her colleagues, for their commitment to ensuring that our work of teaching girls how to keep safe from violence and abuse can continue.”
